The Mists of Avalon is an epic tale of love, loyalty, betrayal, kingship, and magic. It takes place over several decades and two generations of families. It tells the fabled tale of Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. Taking a different view from the legend, it is told from the perspective of the women of Avalon. These powerful women use their magic and wiles to fulfill the will of the Goddess and place a king on the throne of Britain, as well as later take him down from it. With a vision from the Sight, Igraine expects a visit from her sister, Viviane. While Igraine waits, she briefly details the history of her marriage and the birth of her daughter. Igraine appears to feel serenity about her marriage, which..... Mists of Avalon is a best-selling 876 page book by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is one of those rare, spell binding novels in which myth comes to life, and magic flows out to all of us. It vividly tells the magical legend of King Arthur through the eyes of two women. There is the darkly bewitching Morgaine, half sister to Arthur and a high priestess of Avalon. For Morgaine, there is only one quest- to keep Christianity out of Britain, and return it to worship of the Mother Goddess. The lovely Queen Gwenhwyfar is torn between her duty to her king and God, and her passion for the dashing Lancelet. The story is told from the time when Gawen, heir to the royal line, secured the sanctity of Avalon and established it as a sacred place, through to Helen, British princess, and finally of Viviane, who herself must face a new invader and a new danger to Avalon. In the tradition of T.H. Whites The Once and Future King, the author makes use of the prerequisites of the Arthurian legend: Excalibur, the Holy Grail, Lancelets illicit love for Gwenhwyfar, the destruction of Camelot, but with a twist--she presents the entire panoramic story from the female point of view. No passive by-standers, these earthy priestesses from Avalon literally breathe life into a musty, oft-told tale. In Book One: Mistress of Magic, the Lady of the Lake--Viviane--brings about the marriage of her younger sister Igraine to Uther Pendragon. Their only child, Arthur, is believed to be the last hope in the long standing war between Saxons and Romans. Meanwhile, Morgaine, Igraines daughter by her first marriage to Gorlois, has come under the apprenticeship of Viviane at Avalon. In spite of her great love and hope for Morgaine, Viviane is driven by an unrelenting vision. Miserable, but duty-bound, she tricks Morgaine and Arthur into becoming lovers during the night of the ritual fires. Enraged and shamed by what her aunt has done, Morgaine plans to rid herself of the child that has resulted from their union. Book one ends with Arthurs coronation and Morgaines decision to leave Avalon.
